Johannes Torpe Studio

New chair for the official Denmark.

My summervacation is spinning like a crazy wheel. Although my vacation has been ongoing for about a month now, I dont feel like I have truly relaxed yet.

- Have been going crazy with a room makeover of my office at home, and I now have space for all my architecture and design models from school as well as my posters from the critics - feels like an autum breeze that calms my nerves, now where its all at its right place and not thrown together in a creative mess :)

A part of my vacation has also been spend on designing ( although it´s called "time of", I cant really seem to do that! ). I am currently sketching on a competition called "New chair for the official Denmark". I am participating with Mette Risbæk which I designed RE:TABLE with.
The rules for the competition is to design a chair for the royal castle of Amalienborg - more precisely for use at fine dining and for official events. The design should be a symbol of the danish design tradition, and there are multiple demands for the design such as construction, hardware and use, good craftmanship etc. Read the competition rules here: http://www.arkitektforeningen.dk/ny-stol-officielle-danmark

Due to different reasons, Mette and I havent got so much time to design a proposal for the competition, but we feel inspired, and are determined to complete and finish out our idea. I bet there will be a lot of architects and designers who will participate in this competition, some probably more experienced than us, but it doesnt hurt to give it a try right? I look forward to showing our idea here at my portfolio site at the end of the year!

Bo Bedre & Boligliv

It´s pretty exciting to find my own design in some of the biggest interior magazines in Denmark. This month our RE:TABLE was mentioned in "Boligliv" in an article about hot trends of mixing material, shapes and colour.

In "Bo Bedre" our table was mentioned in an article about how furniture designers worldwide has turned focus from the table top to the table leg, and how focus is on visible details and surpricing design.

I:LOVE:WOOD

Læs mere om We:do:wood på www.wedowood.dk !

T for the THOMAS, A for the ALONSO

For quite a while now, I´ve been a huge fan of the designer Thomas Alonso. Now it seems appropiate to mention him at my blog. In design, objects often ends up overdetailed, screaming that the designprocess should have been stopped long before someone has said "this is it- this is the best idea".

Thomas Alonso is a perfect example of how you can design simple and still make it geniusly delicate. Not so long ago i read a quote saying " Any fool can make something complicated, it takes a genius to make it simple": Let the following pictures speak for them self, and let Thomas Alonso just as deep into your hearts as I have done:

Wood Works TOP20!

About a month ago I designed in colaboration with K. Marx and M. Viva, a proposition for the workshop-competition Wood Works, wich is held in Copenhagen in August 2010.

Yesterday we were told that we had been picked as a top20 contestant out of 100 designs - Wauw, that was awesome!
The winner from last year!
Out concept is based on experiencing infinty by walking around in a loop like design, which continous forever. It is made out of 30 hexagones, and sampled together to make a closed form. You have to change between walking and standing and inside the infinty shape, is a hidden littel green spot - whose gonna find it first?

The Wood Works competition is going to be held in Copenhagen at Østre Anlæg from august 9 til august 13. Here we have to build the idea, and make it a contemporary sculpture in the park for the the people of the city to use.
